Guitar legend and educator Kenny Burrell turned 75 on July 31st of this year. He’s had a nearly 30 year association with UCLA as a performing artist, professor and now, head of the jazz studies program. (The photos were taken at a concert on May 19, 1979 in front on UCLA’s Janss Steps. In addition to Kenny, the group featured Teddy Edwards-tenor sax, Ernie Andrews-vocals, Art Hillary-piano, John B. Williams-bass, and Sherman Ferguson-drums.)
This Saturday, December 2nd, Kenny’s 75th birthday is being celebrated at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus with a concert. Featured artists include Pat Metheny, The Gerald Wilson Orchestra, The Jazz Heritage All-Stars, The Kenny Burrell Trio, Russell Malone, Lalo Schifrin, Jeff Clayton, Hubert Laws and some very special surprise guests! Hi Steve Bowie...
I discovered your website by having a Russell Malone google alert sent to my email. Very nice website... It's nice to know that Kenny is being honored this weekend. I noticed you are 47 (like me) and a virgo (like me). When is your birthday? Mine is August 27. My daughter is a jazz pianist here in Shoreline, Washington (two community colleges) and I becqme a Russell Malone jazz fan when I met Russell Malone in July of 2005 at Port Townsend/Centrum workshops where my daughter was participating. It's nice to meet you. Kandie Webster in Washington State (jazzylover59@yahoo.com) Would lover to hear from about the concert this weekend after it happens. On three occasions this past year I have flown down to Oakland and Monterey to see Russell perform with the Ray Brown Trio, Benny Green and his quartet. It has been soome great times. Jazzy cheers, Kandie
Attention all former Teaching Assistants to Professor Kenny Burrell's UCLA Ellingtonia 101a class:
You're still doing a fine job supporting and broadcasting fine public relations on a great jazz guitarist and Duke aficionado!
